United Airlines Installs Starlink on its Regional Aircraft

United has begun installing Starlink on its regional aircraft, enhancing onboard internet speed and reliability. The airline plans to equip over 40 aircraft each month, starting in May, with the goal of completing installation across its two-cabin regional fleet by the end of the year. Eventually, Starlink will be available on all United aircraft.

Passengers on Starlink-equipped aircraft will experience high-speed Wi-Fi with speeds reaching up to 250 megabits per second (Mbps), which is 50 times faster than what is currently available on regional flights. Travelers will have access to streaming, gaming, shopping, and other entertainment options without interruptions.

Starlink will be free for all MileagePlus members. Those who are not yet part of the program can sign up at united.com/starlink to enjoy seamless inflight connectivity.

Simplified Installation and Lightweight Equipment

The installation process for Starlink is designed to be efficient, taking each aircraft out of service for only four days. This includes the removal of the existing Wi-Fi system, installation of the new equipment, and system testing. In contrast, other inflight connectivity providers require more than ten days for installation.

United’s Vice President of Digital Technology, Grant Milstead, shared his thoughts on the project’s progress. “Our ability to roll-out this innovative service with unprecedented speed and scale is a direct result of the advanced equipment, technology and team of experts at United,” he said. “Starlink has been a terrific partner – our combined spirit of innovation and collaboration will enable us to hit our goal of more than 300 regional aircraft installations before the end of this year.”

The Starlink system weighs only 85 pounds, much lighter than other inflight connectivity kits, which can weigh up to 300 pounds. Its electronically steered antenna has no moving parts, making it easier to install and requiring less maintenance. The reduced weight also makes aircraft more fuel-efficient.

Reliable Connectivity in Any Weather

Weather conditions on the ground do not affect Starlink’s performance, thanks to inter-satellite laser links that keep the network connected at all times. The system continuously switches between Starlink’s extensive network of low-earth orbit satellites, ensuring uninterrupted service throughout flights.

With the rollout of Starlink, United is enhancing the passenger experience while streamlining its own operations. The airline remains committed to improving onboard connectivity and expanding this service across its entire fleet.
