Qantas Plans Huge Boeing 737 Cabin Upgrades

Qantas is set to modernize its domestic and short-haul international flights with a large-scale Boeing 737 cabin upgrades program. This initiative will revamp 42 aircraft, complementing the airline’s ongoing fleet renewal efforts.

As part of this investment, Qantas will introduce several cabin enhancements aimed at improving passenger comfort and convenience. The upgraded 737s will feature new seats in both Business and Economy, larger overhead compartments with up to 50% more space, and a refreshed cabin design with updated carpets, sidewalls, and mood lighting. The aircraft will continue to offer fast and free Wi-Fi.

These improvements will ensure the updated 737s align with the customer experience provided by Qantas’ new domestic fleet. The first refurbished aircraft is expected to begin service in 2027. The airline currently operates 737s on domestic routes, trans-Tasman flights, and short-haul international destinations such as Bali, Fiji, and Vanuatu.

Fleet Renewal and Expansion

Qantas’ investment in cabin upgrades is part of a broader effort to modernize its domestic fleet. Over the next decade, the airline will gradually replace its Boeing 737s with the Airbus A321XLR, while also expanding its fleet with more A220 aircraft. Five new A220s are already in operation.

Qantas will be among the first airlines worldwide to operate the A321XLR. The first aircraft entered final assembly in November and has now been painted in Qantas livery. New images of the aircraft were released today.

The A321XLR is expected to arrive in June, with four of these aircraft scheduled for delivery by the end of the year. Passengers can look forward to more spacious Economy seating, a 66% increase in Business seats, a quieter cabin, extra-large overhead lockers, and fast free Wi-Fi.

Commitment to Passenger Experience

Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson emphasized that upgrading both new and existing aircraft plays an important role in delivering a high-quality travel experience. “Investing in our fleet is one of the most important ways that we can transform the flying experience for our customers and make sure we’re consistently delivering a great journey,” said Ms. Hudson.

Ms. Hudson also highlighted the impact on the airline’s staff. “This investment in cabins will also support our people who are dedicated to providing the best inflight experience to our customers.” While the upgraded 737s will remain in service throughout the fleet renewal program, some older aircraft scheduled for earlier retirement will also receive improvements.

Qantas and Jetstar have over 100 new aircraft on firm order, with more purchase options available. In addition, more than 80 aircraft across both airlines are set to undergo cabin upgrades, reinforcing Qantas’ commitment to enhancing the passenger experience.
