Philippines orders 12 KAI FA-50 Block 20 light fighters

The Philippine government has finalized a $700 million agreement with Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) to acquire 12 additional FA-50 Block 20 light combat aircraft. This procurement will increase the Philippine Air Force’s fleet to 23 FA-50PHs, following the loss of one aircraft earlier this year. The new jets are scheduled for delivery by 2030.

The FA-50 Block 20 will feature air-to-air refueling capabilities, a feature not present in the current fleet. Additionally, they will be equipped with active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars, specifically Raytheon’s PhantomStrike system. The jets will also support “advanced air-to-air and air-to-ground” weapons.

This acquisition is part of the Philippines’ ongoing efforts to modernize its military capabilities. The FA-50PHs have been utilized in various operations, including anti-insurgency missions and patrolling the South China Sea.

F-16V deal still in the works

In addition to expanding its FA-50PH fleet, the Philippines is evaluating a potential purchase of 20 Lockheed Martin F-16C/D Block 70/72 fighters. The U.S. State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of the Philippines of F-16 Aircraft for an estimated cost of $5.58 billion. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale. The package includes 16 F-16C Block 70/72 aircraft, four F-16D Block 70/72 aircraft, and a comprehensive suite of weapons and support equipment.

The Philippines has been deliberating the acquisition of new combat aircraft for over a decade. The Saab Gripen was considered the main rival to the F-16 for the requirement, but KAI has also shared information with Manila about its developmental KF-21.

The Philippines is actively enhancing its air defense capabilities through the acquisition of 12 additional FA-50PH aircraft and considering the procurement of 20 F-16C/D Block 70/72 fighters. These efforts reflect the country’s commitment to modernizing its military assets and strengthening its defense posture.
