Lufthansa Group Acquires 41% Stake in ITA Airways

Lufthansa Group has solidified its position in Italy’s aviation sector with the acquisition of a 41% stake in ITA Airways. The partnership was finalized on November 29, 2024, following approvals from competition authorities, including the European Commission. The deal brings ITA Airways under Lufthansa Group’s network of airlines, marking it as the group’s fifth network carrier.

This strategic acquisition was initiated through a €325 million capital increase. While the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) retains 59% ownership, options have been outlined for Lufthansa to acquire the remaining shares, potentially beginning this year. ITA Airways will continue to operate under its established brand, with plans to further develop its services as part of the group.

Rome Fiumicino Airport, a five-star Skytrax-rated facility, becomes the southernmost hub in Lufthansa Group’s portfolio. Milan Linate, known for its proximity to northern Italy’s economically vibrant region, also assumes a prominent role, reflecting the importance of Italy as a home market for the group.

Enhancing Customer Experience

The partnership brings numerous benefits to travelers. ITA Airways’ frequent flyer program, “Volare,” will soon integrate with Lufthansa’s loyalty program, Miles & More. Passengers will gain the ability to earn and redeem miles across both networks. Additional joint initiatives include codeshare agreements, shared lounge access, and ITA Airways’ planned admission to the Star Alliance network. Details about these improvements will be shared with passengers in due course.

Founded in 2021, ITA Airways has quickly established itself with a modern fleet of 99 Airbus aircraft, including long-haul models like the A350-900 and A330-900neo. Operating from its main hubs at Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate airports, the airline serves nearly 70 destinations globally. In 2024, the airline carried approximately 18 million passengers, showcasing its rapid growth.

With this partnership, Lufthansa Group gains a stronger foothold in the Italian market. Italy now joins Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Belgium as a home market for the group, reinforcing its importance within Lufthansa’s global strategy. The collaboration also promises streamlined travel experiences, smoother connections, and access to a wider network for passengers.
