The U.S. Air Force has awarded Lockheed Martin a $270 million contract to integrate next-generation infrared sensors onto the F-22 Raptor. Known as the Infrared Defensive System (IRDS), this new technology aims to enhance the aircraft’s survivability and combat effectiveness. These F-22 upgrades will ensure the Raptor remains a dominant force in the skies.
The IRDS will feature an advanced, distributed system of TacIRST sensors developed by Lockheed Martin. These sensors will be embedded in the F-22, offering enhanced protection for pilots against current and emerging threats. In addition to its integration on the F-22, Lockheed Martin will also apply this technology to other platforms, expanding its use across different military aircraft.

Hank Tucker, vice president of Mission Systems at Lockheed Martin, also highlighted the importance of the IRDS in improving pilot safety and mission success. “We understand the need for advanced and versatile infrared systems like IRDS that will make pilots’ missions more survivable and lethal against current and future adversaries,” he said regarding the latest F-22 upgrades.
The TacIRST sensors embedded in the IRDS are expected to strengthen the F-22’s ability to detect and respond to threats quickly. This aligns with the Air Force’s long-term goal of maintaining an operational edge in air combat scenarios. The F-22 upgrades are crucial to this goal.
