F-35 Fleet Reaches a Remarkable 1 Million Flight Hours

The global F-35 Lightning II fighter jets fleet has surpassed 1 million flight hours, a milestone reflecting the aircraft’s expanding presence and continued role in securing air dominance for the United States and its allies. Lockheed Martin confirmed the achievement, emphasizing the dedication of those involved in the program.

With more than 1,100 F-35 Lightning II aircraft in service worldwide, the fleet continues to grow. The recent milestone highlights the program’s scale and the aircraft’s importance in modern military operations. The F-35C, the carrier-based variant, marked a major moment in November 2024 when it was deployed in combat for the first time, successfully striking targets in contested airspace.

One Million Flight Hours

“Not only is it the world’s most advanced fighter jet, the F-35 also makes those fighting with it better by connecting the battlespace, ensuring the warfighter gets home safely,” said Chauncey McIntosh, vice president and general manager of the F-35 Lightning II program at Lockheed Martin.

It highlights the unwavering dedication of our pilots, maintainers, industry partners and our international partners and foreign military sales customers,” he said. “This milestone is not just a testament to the F-35’s unmatched capability, but also to the resilience and commitment of everyone involved in this program. As we continue to expand the fleet and advance the F-35’s capabilities, we are ensuring the warfighters of today and tomorrow have the most advanced, reliable, and effective tool to protect our nations.”

“The F-35 is the backbone of the allied force, enabling peace through strength in the 21st century,” McIntosh said. “As we look to the future, we are focused on continuing to increase the capabilities of the F-35 to ensure we stay ahead of adversarial threats.”

One area of focus is the aircraft’s integration with drones, including its role in the U.S. Air Force’s upcoming Collaborative Combat Aircraft program. As the fleet continues expanding, the next 1 million flight hours will build on the progress already made, ensuring the F-35 Lightning II remains a critical force in global defense.
