The Philippines has secured approval from the United States to acquire 20 units of the Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 70 aircraft, marking a major development in its effort to build a stronger and more self-reliant defense system. The U.S. State Department approved the proposed deal, which aims to support the modernization of the country’s air force and provide new tools for air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. The F-16 Block 70 is known for its advanced technology, including the Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System, or Auto GCAS, which has been instrumental in saving lives during flight operations.
This acquisition reflects the country’s continuing effort to upgrade its air power capabilities. With a strong reputation for durability and performance, the F-16 remains a trusted aircraft across the globe. Currently, more than 3,100 units operate in 28 countries, making it one of the most widely used fighter jets. The Philippine Air Force has already seen the aircraft in action during the recent Cope Thunder exercise held at Clark Air Base in Pampanga, where the F-16 demonstrated its ability to operate in various conditions. The activity also tested its compatibility with Philippine air assets and showed its readiness to operate alongside them.
Support for self-reliance and ongoing modernization
The F-16 Block 70 matches the Philippine Air Force’s modernization goals. It works well with existing platforms like the FA-50, which simplifies logistics and helps reduce costs. This compatibility makes it easier to train pilots and maintain readiness. The country will also benefit from being able to service and support the aircraft within its borders, which supports long-term operational readiness and the goal of developing more independent defense capabilities.
“Lockheed Martin is proud to support the Philippines’ efforts to modernize its air power capabilities with the F-16 Block 70,” said Aimee Burnett, vice president – Lockheed Martin F-16 Business Development. “The F-16 Block 70 will deliver advanced capabilities and performance to address the Philippines’ defense requirements and serve as a strategic asset to support the country’s Self-Reliant Defense Posture.”

Lockheed Martin continues to serve as a key partner to the Philippines, especially through its involvement with the Black Hawk and C-130 aircraft. This connection positions the company well to assist in the maintenance and sustainability of the F-16 program in the country. Burnett emphasized this connection, noting the long-standing technical support the company has offered worldwide.
Opportunities for local development and training
The sale of the F-16 Block 70 could also bring broader benefits beyond defense. Lockheed Martin plans to discuss with the Philippine government and local organizations several options to support skills development, including workforce training, in-country repair services, and future research partnerships. These areas of cooperation are still under review but are seen as potential additions to the defense package.
“As an industry partner on both the Black Hawk and C-130 platforms, Lockheed Martin is uniquely positioned to address the Philippines’ sustainment needs and enhance industrial cooperation opportunities,” adds Burnett. “The F-16 offer builds upon decades of worldwide technical transfer experience and could include robust workforce development programs and in-country maintenance and repair capabilities, among other research & development concepts currently being discussed with the Philippine government, industry and academia.”
Through this agreement, the Philippine Air Force stands to improve its combat readiness and operate with more modern, capable equipment. The F-16 Block 70’s features will help prepare the country to meet current and future defense challenges and ensure long-term security through a system that aligns with the country’s strategy of self-reliance.
