Etihad Airways to Spend $1 Billion on Cabin Upgrades

Etihad Airways has unveiled plans to invest $1 billion for cabin upgrades of around 50 aircraft, focusing on consistency and enhanced passenger experience across its fleet. CEO Antonoaldo Neves emphasized the importance of aligning the interiors of all aircraft, regardless of their current condition. “We’re going to retrofit even the planes that don’t need a retrofit, but we believe it’s important for the airline to have consistency across the fleet,” Neves explained.

The retrofitting will start with Etihad’s Boeing 787 and 777 fleets, which include ten 787-10s, thirty-three 787-9s, and nine 777-300ERs. According to ch-aviation fleet data, these upgrades will cover the entire cabin, including new business class seats, high-speed internet, and a modern inflight entertainment system. Afterward, the program will expand to include other widebody aircraft, such as the Airbus A350-1000, except for the A380. The airline currently operates five A350-1000s and expects 15 more to be delivered in the coming years.

Etihad’s five-year growth strategy outlines plans to expand its fleet from 102 to around 150 aircraft. The airline’s order book includes 20 A321XLRs, one A320neo, seven A350Fs, 15 A350-1000s, 17 Boeing 777-9s, eight 777-8s, 20 787-10s, and eight 787-9s. Additionally, the carrier has reportedly entered exploratory talks with both Airbus and Boeing about a potential large order for additional widebody aircraft.

The retrofit program is scheduled to begin towards the end of 2025. Neves attributed the delay to supply chain challenges, particularly with sourcing business class seats and toilets. Despite these issues, the upgrades will ensure a consistent travel experience for passengers, regardless of the aircraft they fly on.

Investing for the Future

This $1 billion Etihad cabin upgrades initiative is part of Etihad’s broader $7 billion investment strategy, which also includes new aircraft acquisitions, network realignments, and route expansions. Neves described this approach as vital to supporting the airline’s ambitious growth plans over the next few years.

Etihad recently reported strong financial results, further affirming its growth trajectory. For the first nine months ending September 30, 2024, the airline posted after-tax earnings of AED1.4 billion ($380 million), reflecting a 66% increase compared to the same period in 2023. “It underscores the effectiveness of our strategy and the strength of our growth trajectory,” Neves said, highlighting the airline’s financial resilience.
