More Long-Haul Flights Being Studied by Cebu Pacific

Cebu Pacific is studying the possibility of expanding its long-haul operations, supported by fleet growth, economic stability, rising demand from overseas Filipino workers, and an increase in inbound tourism.

Speaking at Routes Asia 2025 in Perth, Australia, Director of Network Planning Angela Lugtu discussed the airline’s goal of extending its network beyond its current coverage. Cebu Pacific is evaluating destinations within a nine-hour flight range, using its Airbus A330-900 aircraft, which seats 459 passengers. The airline currently operates long-haul flights to Dubai, Melbourne, and Sydney.

According to a report from Aviationweek, Lugtu stated, “In the coming years, we expect to see a change in the capacity split, as we grow the international network.” At present, 73% of Cebu Pacific’s capacity is allocated to domestic flights, while 27% is for international routes. The airline anticipates a shift as it increases its global presence.

Currently, Cebu Pacific serves 26 international destinations. By the end of 2024, the airline had transported 24.5 million passengers and operated a fleet of 99 aircraft. To support its expansion, it secured an agreement for up to 152 Airbus narrowbody aircraft, including firm orders for 102 A321neos and options for 50 A320neo-family aircraft. Additionally, five A330-900s are on order.

Fleet Expansion and Long-Haul Market Growth

Although engine supply chain issues have created short-term challenges, Cebu Pacific remains focused on expansion. Lugtu explained that the new aircraft would allow the airline to introduce more routes. “The Philippine economy is projected to sustain a 6% growth in the next few years until 2029,” she said. “The population is about 117 million people currently, and we expect it to grow to 130 million by 2030. The proportion of younger people who want to fly is also increasing.”

The overseas Filipino worker population continues to support longer haul services. In 2023, over 2.3 million overseas workers were based in countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar, creating steady demand for flights.

Improvements in Manila’s infrastructure are also playing a role in Cebu Pacific’s expansion. The upcoming New Manila International Airport in Bulacan, set to open between 2028 and 2029, is expected to enhance connectivity. Lugtu compared its future role to Tokyo’s dual-airport system, where multiple airports function together to support travel demand.
