Cathay Cargo Terminal has become the first cargo terminal in Hong Kong to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its existing CCTV infrastructure. Partnering with Intenseye, a leader in AI-powered workplace safety solutions, the terminal uses AI to monitor safety and security hazards in real time. This advancement aims to minimize risks and improve workplace safety across its facilities.
The AI-powered system relies on the terminal’s current CCTV network to detect potential safety and security issues. These include situations such as workers not wearing required safety equipment, vehicles or machinery operating too close to individuals, and non-compliance with pedestrian walkways or work-at-height protocols. The technology also identifies terminal-specific risks, such as shipments left unattended at truck docks and unauthorized intrusions.
Cathay Cargo Terminal has worked closely with Intenseye to customize the AI solution for the cargo environment. Real-time alerts allow for immediate action to address potential hazards. Intenseye has incorporated Ethical UI principles into the system, ensuring privacy protections while focusing on identifying risks that could impact workplace safety.
Mark Watts, Chief Operating Officer at Cathay Cargo Terminal, underscored the importance of using AI to enhance their safety standards. “We take safety and security extremely seriously. We see AI as an important tool to enhance and augment our existing safety management system, to help ‘see the unseen,’ and to further strengthen hazard reporting and leading safety indicators as we strive to ensure a zero-harm workplace,” he stated.
Recognized for Safety Excellence
Cathay Cargo Terminal’s commitment to safety has garnered recognition at the Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Awards. The terminal received five awards, including the prestigious Gold Award for its Safety Management System. These accolades highlight its dedication to maintaining high safety standards and continuous improvement.
Sercan Esen, CEO of Intenseye, expressed pride in the partnership, saying, “It’s exciting to see Cathay Cargo Terminal lead the way as the first cargo terminal to adopt our technology, tailored specifically to their needs. Our focus has always been on helping companies create safer environments, and it’s great to see the real-world impact of these new features in improving day-to-day safety and efficiency.”
In addition to its current initiatives, Cathay Cargo Terminal plans to expand AI integration across other safety systems. AI is being deployed on all X-ray machines at the terminal to enhance its Enhanced Lithium Screening program. By 2025, the terminal plans to implement AI in its Thermal Imaging program to further strengthen safety and operational efficiency.
Tom Owen, Cathay Cargo Director and Chair of Cathay Cargo Terminal, emphasized the company’s vision for the future. “With this new AI technology, we are setting new standards in both safety and digital excellence for cargo terminal operators,” he said.
Cathay Cargo Terminal’s use of AI represents a significant step in improving safety and operational practices. The partnership with Intenseye and the development of tailored AI features reinforce the company’s commitment to achieving a safer and more efficient workplace.
