Bulgaria Receives First F-16 Block 70 Aircraft

Bulgaria has taken delivery of its first F-16 Block 70 fighter jet from Lockheed Martin, a move that supports the country’s efforts to upgrade its air force. The multi-role fighter was handed over in Greenville, South Carolina, where the F-16s are assembled.

A ceremony held last Friday morning marked the official delivery, attended by Bulgaria’s Minister of Defence, Atanas Zapryanov, along with representatives from both the United States and Bulgaria. This aircraft is part of Bulgaria’s order for 16 F-16 jets.

Advancing Bulgaria’s Defense Capabilities

Lockheed Martin continues to manufacture F-16 Block 70/72 jets for various international customers, with a backlog of 117 aircraft in production. So far, 23 have been delivered to partner nations.

Mike Shoemaker, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin’s Integrated Fighter Group, emphasized the importance of the F-16 for Bulgaria’s defense. “The F-16 will help the Bulgarian Air Force stay ahead of threats in the region and play a key role in the allied peacekeeping mission in Europe and around the world,” he stated. He also highlighted the aircraft’s proven combat capabilities and its advanced features in the Block 70 version.

Impact on the U.S. Industrial Sector

The F-16 program continues to contribute to the U.S. economy by supporting over 46,000 jobs across the country. As production moves forward, Lockheed Martin remains committed to delivering aircraft that enhance the defense capabilities of allied nations, such as the Bulgaria F-16 order.

With the first F-16 Block 70 now in Bulgaria’s possession, the nation its air force with modern, combat-ready aircraft. The remaining jets in the order are expected to be delivered in the coming years.
